On September 21, 2024, The Company Cebu – Mandaue transformed into a hub of creativity and collaboration for the “Adaptive Design Sprints” workshop, facilitated by the dynamic Karl Michael Dela Cruz. This event brought together passionate UX designers and innovators from the CebuUXD community, all eager to tackle real-world challenges while honing their skills. Let’s dive into the highlights of this engaging workshop and discover how participants unleashed their creativity through immersive experiences.

A Warm Welcome to Our Creative Community

As the clock struck 10 AM, the air buzzed with excitement. UX designers, developers, product owners, and product managers gathered at The Company Cebu – Mandaue, a space designed to foster connection and collaboration. Participants greeted each other with smiles and shared stories, setting a friendly and collaborative atmosphere for the day ahead.

Karl kicked things off with an overview of adaptive design sprints—an approach that values flexibility and real-time feedback over rigid timelines. This workshop was all about diving deep into user needs and crafting innovative solutions together.

Meet Karl Michael Dela Cruz

Leading the charge was Karl Michael Dela Cruz, a seasoned UX designer with a wealth of experience in designing tech products for various sectors, from fitness to education. As the heart and soul of CebUXD, Karl is dedicated to empowering the local design community. His approachable nature and expertise made everyone feel at ease, ready to jump into the creative process.

Immersing Ourselves in User Scenarios

The workshop divided participants into three groups, each focusing on a different challenge: career paths, finance tracking, and mental health. But before they could start designing, Karl guided everyone through a crucial immersion exercise. Here are the compelling user scenarios that guided the participants’ design journey:

  • Mental Health: Claire is a third-year psychology student juggling a busy schedule and feeling overwhelmed as exams approach. Struggling to concentrate and facing delays in accessing mental health services, she’s searching for ways to manage her stress effectively.
  • Finances: Mark, an IT student, balances his studies with freelance work. After unexpected expenses disrupted his budget, he’s now borrowing money to cover rent and is looking for strategies to stabilize his finances while managing his academic and freelance commitments.
  • Career Development: Andrea, a recent Business Administration graduate, is actively job hunting but facing a slow response rate. While refining her resume and volunteering to build experience, she’s contemplating whether to adjust her approach to enhance her chances in the competitive job market.

Crafting Solutions Together

Participants outlined the journey of their user personas, starting from how they would discover the application they designed, to how they would use it, and ultimately, what the goal of the application was. This process was crucial in understanding the user experience from start to finish.

Armed with a deep understanding of their users’ challenges, each group began brainstorming applications to help tackle these issues. This was where the magic happened—participants combined strategic thinking with creative problem-solving, embracing the spirit of collaboration.

During the workshop, groups engaged in lively discussions to identify potential app features that would resonate with their users, focusing on solutions that could truly make a difference. Creativity flourished as participants brainstormed freely, sketching concepts and visualizing how their apps could evolve. The infectious energy in the room fostered synergy, with team members building on each other’s ideas and ensuring that every voice was heard. This collaborative spirit created a rich tapestry of insights, ultimately enriching their final concepts.

Prototyping and Iteration: Bringing Ideas to Life

As the day progressed, it was time to bring those ideas to life through prototyping. Participants got hands-on, creating low-fidelity prototypes of their apps using paper, markers, and a whole lot of imagination. This process was all about iteration—quickly sketching out ideas, getting feedback, and refining them on the spot.

Karl encouraged teams to think critically about user journeys and app functionalities, prompting discussions that deepened their understanding of user experience.

Presentations and Feedback: Learning Together

As the clock approached 3 PM, it was time for each group to present their prototypes. Participants shared their creations, highlighting how their apps aimed to empower users and address their specific challenges. The atmosphere was one of camaraderie and excitement as everyone cheered for their peers.

Following each presentation, the feedback sessions were equally engaging. Karl facilitated discussions that encouraged constructive criticism and new perspectives. This open exchange of ideas not only strengthened the prototypes but also reinforced the value of collaboration and community in the design process.

A Day Full of Inspiration and Connection

As the workshop wrapped up, participants reflected on the experience, sharing their insights and newfound knowledge. Many remarked on how the adaptive design sprint approach had transformed their view of the design process. The focus on empathy, collaboration, and rapid iteration ignited a passion for tackling future projects with renewed energy.

Leaving The Company Cebu – Mandaue, attendees were not only inspired but also equipped with new tools and methodologies to apply in their work.
