The phrase “Work Hard, Play Harder” couldn’t have been more fitting for the first-ever sportsfest organized by the Davao Freelancers Community. This event brought together an incredible group of freelancers, from virtual assistants to social media managers, proving that while they dominate their niches professionally, they also have what it takes to thrive in sports. Hosted in the vibrant city of Davao, this much-anticipated sportsfest saw around 150 freelancers participate in a series of competitive and fun games, fostering not only physical activity but also camaraderie and teamwork among members of the freelancing community.

The Davao Freelancers Community sportsfest featured four main games—basketball, volleyball, badminton, and chess. Divided into several teams, the players put aside their keyboards, emails, and task management systems to showcase their skills on the court and in the game room. With freelancers balancing the demands of clients, tight deadlines, and the pressure of being their own bosses, this sportsfest was a refreshing reminder of the importance of balancing work with play. It allowed freelancers to take a break from their usual grind, reconnect with peers, and engage in some good-natured competition.

One of the major highlights of the event was the active participation of The Company Cebu, one of the key sponsors of the sportsfest. In addition to supporting the event financially, The Company Cebu introduced its Employer of Record (EOR) service and referral program, providing freelancers with valuable insights into how they can grow their businesses while ensuring their legal and administrative needs are met. Their involvement added a professional development aspect to the event, giving freelancers an opportunity to learn more about business growth strategies.

The presence of The Company Cebu at the event strengthened the bridge between Davao’s freelancers and Cebu’s growing freelance community, signaling future collaborations and support. The Company Cebu also extended an open invitation, warmly welcoming the Davao Freelancers Community to their space when they visit Cebu, where they will be met with the same spirit of solidarity. This gesture emphasized their commitment to fostering strong connections and empowering freelancers across regions.

The Kick-Off: Work Hard, Play Harder

The sportsfest began with an energizing opening ceremony that set the tone for the day. With banners waving and team colors proudly displayed, the energy in the air was electric. Freelancers, some meeting each other for the first time in person after months of virtual collaborations, were visibly excited to be part of something bigger than themselves. The event was themed “Work Hard, Play Harder,” a mantra that resonates deeply with freelancers who understand the need for both professional excellence and personal well-being.

Following the opening ceremony, the games began in earnest. Basketball and volleyball matches were held in quick succession, with players showing off not only their athletic prowess but also their teamwork and strategy skills. It was clear that these freelancers were used to problem-solving and collaboration, whether in the digital world or on the court.

The Games: A Showcase of Talent and Teamwork

The basketball games were particularly intense, with teams going head-to-head in a series of fast-paced matches. Players dribbled, passed, and shot with the precision one might expect from those used to working under pressure. Each team showcased their unique strategies and skills, making every match a thrilling spectacle. The camaraderie on and off the court was evident, with teams supporting each other despite the competitive atmosphere.

The volleyball matches were equally exhilarating. Freelancers spiked, served, and volleyed with gusto, displaying athleticism and agility that left spectators in awe. Badminton, though often perceived as a more relaxed sport, was anything but calm in this competition. Freelancers with lightning-fast reflexes darted across the court, sending shuttlecocks flying back and forth in a blur of motion.

Meanwhile, chess—often seen as the ultimate game of strategy—provided a quieter yet equally intense backdrop to the more physical sports. Freelancers faced off in thoughtful silence, contemplating their next moves with the same careful precision they apply to their business strategies. The chess matches were a testament to the mental acuity and sharp decision-making skills that are trademarks of the freelancing profession.

A Champion Emerges: The Rise of the Blue Team

While the event featured several competitive teams, the Blue Team’s journey stood out. After a rough start, they regrouped and began making smart plays that led to their ultimate victory. Their story was one of perseverance, adaptability, and unwavering team spirit. Even in the face of defeat, the Blue Team encouraged each other, reminding everyone that it’s not about how you start, but how you finish.

Their victory wasn’t just about winning trophies; it was a celebration of the community’s shared values. The Blue Team’s triumph symbolized the power of unity, sportsmanship, and the relentless pursuit of excellence—qualities that every freelancer in the community strives for in their professional and personal lives.

The Spirit of Sportsmanship

Throughout the sportsfest, the freelancers displayed a remarkable level of sportsmanship. Despite the competition, the spirit of camaraderie was evident. Teammates cheered each other on, and even opposing teams showed mutual respect and encouragement. After intense basketball or volleyball matches, competitors would congratulate each other with high-fives and pats on the back, demonstrating that the event was more about building connections than merely securing a win.

This sense of community extended beyond the games. Players helped each other, offering advice, sharing water, and providing moral support. It was a heartening sight to see freelancers, who are often siloed in their respective niches, coming together to create such a positive and uplifting environment. The Davao Freelancers Community has truly cultivated a space where competition and cooperation go hand in hand, and the sportsfest was a perfect showcase of these values.

Sponsors and Supporters: A Collaborative Effort

A key part of the success of this sportsfest was the overwhelming support from various sponsors. The Company Cebu, in particular, played a significant role not just as a financial sponsor but also as an advocate for freelancers. During the event, The Company Cebu representatives discussed the benefits of their Employer of Record (EOR) service, which is designed to help freelancers navigate the complexities of employment laws and regulations, ensuring that they can focus on growing their businesses. They also introduced their referral program, encouraging freelancers to recommend clients and benefit from the partnership.

The Company Cebu’s participation in the event wasn’t just about sponsorship—it was about fostering a sense of connection between freelancers in Davao and Cebu. They extended a warm invitation to the Davao freelancers, promising to support their endeavors in Cebu as well. This act of solidarity underscored The Company Cebu’s commitment to empowering freelancers across the country, creating a supportive network that transcends geographical boundaries.

Other sponsors also contributed significantly, offering both monetary and in-kind support. From sports equipment to refreshments, their contributions ensured that the event ran smoothly and that participants had everything they needed to enjoy the day. One sponsor, in particular, stood out—Big Boy Gears, who went beyond just providing support by actively participating in the games. When the Blue Team needed to complete their lineup for the basketball tournament, Big Boy Gears volunteered to join the team, filling the gap and bringing a renewed sense of energy to the court. It was a remarkable display of teamwork and commitment, showing that the spirit of the event extended beyond competition.

The entire community was overwhelmed with gratitude, knowing that these sponsors believed in the freelancers’ cause and were willing to invest in their well-being. The willingness of Big Boy Gears to step in and support the Blue Team embodied the incredible spirit of camaraderie that made the sportsfest a truly special occasion. This was more than just an event; it was a celebration of unity, support, and the shared values that define the freelancing community.
