Visayas Art Fair: Through the Canvases of Local Talents Posted On: December 13, 2023 | Last Updated: December 14, 2023 | Posted in Events, News Our visit to Visayas Art Fair last November 24-26, 2023 at Oakridge Business Park in Cebu proved to be more than just a visual treat; it was an immersive experience into the lives and stories behind the canvases. As we strolled through the vibrant display of colors and forms, we had the privilege of engaging with some remarkable artists, each with a unique narrative and creative journey. Fernando Kabigting: Capturing Life’s Essence Mr. Fernando Kabigting (center) Though we missed the chance to speak with the “Grand Old Man of Philippine Art” himself, his wife graciously shared their life story and shed light on the artistry and legacy of this incredible artist. Kabigting’s work breathes life into each canvas, capturing moments from his memory chest and preserving them in time, often on reclaimed wood, adding a layer of history to his creations. Michael Dondoyano: From Tech to Canvas Mr. Michael Dondoyano (right) In the presence of Michael Dondoyano’s awe-inspiring paintings depicting the beauty of Camotes Island, we were fortunate to learn about his journey. A modest and unassuming artist, Dondoyano transitioned from the tech world to pursue his true passion in art during his college years. His story serves as a reminder of the transformative power of following one’s creative instincts. Christian Regis: Bridging the Abstract and Figurative Mr. Christian Regis (right) Christian Regis showcased a mastery of blending abstract and figurative art. His vibrant and conceptual pieces bring historical landmarks and cities to life on canvas, transforming everyday scenery into a visual feast for the senses. Regis’s work is a testament to the power of creativity in reimagining the ordinary. Isah Rodillo: Where Art Meets Science Ms. Isah Rodillo (left) Ms. Isah Rodillo’s artistry goes beyond mere skill, combining rigorous research and experimentation. With a background in chemical engineering, she produces top-quality resin art that is as technical as it is visually stunning. Her work exemplifies the fusion of science and creativity, resulting in unique and captivating pieces. Gallery Down South: More Than an Art Space Gallery Down South at the Visayas Art Fair Led by Kublai Millan, Gallery Down South provided not only a visual feast but also a journey into the heart of Mindanao. The gallery serves as a beacon of support for underprivileged communities, fostering talent and mentorship. The artists here are not just creators but also mentors, emphasizing that the process of becoming an artist is as significant as the finished artwork. Our journey through the exhibition was not just about admiring the strokes on canvas; it was about connecting with the soul behind each masterpiece. The artists we encountered are more than creators; they are storytellers, mentors, and advocates for the transformative power of art.
